Africa's payment landscape, which is featured by the world's highest mobile money penetration and the fastest-growing cryptocurrency adoption, is not a tech accident but a macroeconomic inevitability.
This report traces that inevitability to two structural causes: (1) a trade-dependent, resource-exporting economy that generates massive cross-border payment flows yet remains at an extensive growth stage, and (2) a shallow financial system plagued by banking exclusion, de-risking, and FX mismanagement that fuels chronic inflation.
Together, these forces create a vacuum where mobile money replaces banks as daily payment rails, and cryptocurrency serves as both a store of value against depreciating local currencies and a low-cost medium for cross-border exchange.
Within the continent, the critical divide is the Sahara: North Africa folds into the MENA framework with its oil-anchored, Middle Eastern-aligned economy, while Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) , which is home to acute dollar shortages, fragmented currencies, and grassroots crypto adoption led by Nigeria and South Africa, represents the more distinctive and high-potential payment market for builders and investors.
Section 1 — The African Economy at a Glance: Large, Young, and Trade-Dependent
1.1 Demographics
Africa's population reached approximately 1.55 billion in 2025, accounting for roughly 19% of the global total (United Nations, 2025). It is the youngest continent on earth, with the median age of population at just 19, and the fastest-growing, expanding at approximately 2% per year, a pace no other continent approaches.
By 2100, Africa's population is projected to nearly triple to 3.81 billion, representing 37% of humanity. The demographic contrast is striking: while Asia's population is expected to peak around mid-century and then decline, and Europe and Latin America face outright shrinkage, Africa will be the only continent still experiencing substantial growth through the end of the century (see Exhibits 1 and 2).
This demographic trajectory carries profound implications for payment infrastructure. A young, urbanizing, mobile-native population is entering the workforce and the consumer economy at scale, in a context where traditional banking coverage remains thin. The demand for accessible, low-cost financial services, including payments, savings, credit, will only intensify.
1.2 Resource endowment and industrial structure
Africa is exceptionally rich in natural resources. The continent held approximately 119.4 billion barrels of proven crude oil reserves in 2024, accounting for roughly 7.6% of the global total (OPEC Annual Statistical Bulletin, 2025), with the largest reserve holders concentrated in Libya, Nigeria, Algeria, and Angola. Beyond hydrocarbons, Africa's mineral wealth is globally significant and, in several categories, dominant: the continent remains the world's most important diamond-producing region, holds around 49% of global cobalt reserves, which is overwhelmingly centered in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is also the definitive source of platinum group metals (PGMs), with South Africa alone controlling roughly 78% of world PGM reserves. These endowments position Africa as a critical node in global commodity supply chains, from energy to electric vehicles to industrial catalysts.
Yet this wealth remains largely extracted and exported as raw commodities, with minimal downstream processing or value addition. Manufacturing and agriculture are underdeveloped, infrastructure is severely lacking — transport costs account for roughly 40% of final goods prices (Africa Transport Policy Program, 2015) — and the cumulative infrastructure investment gap through 2040 is estimated at $1.7 trillion (Global Infrastructure Hub).
The result is a classic resource-dependent economy: Africa exports low-value-add commodities while importing manufactured goods and processed food, locking the continent into the trade dependency examined next.
1.3 Trade dependency and remittance flows
Africa's economy is deeply intertwined with global trade and diaspora remittances. Cross-continent merchandise flows for export and import reached $604.5 billion and $684.5 billion, respectively, in 2023. While remittance inflow stood at $52.16 billion in 2023. These two pillars generate an outsized demand for cross-border payment infrastructure: B2B settlement for trade, and C2C corridors for remittances.
Trade volumes and cyclical vulnerability. In 2023, Africa's total goods exports reached $604.5 billion (down 15.1% year-on-year) against $684.5 billion in imports (down 1.6%), producing a trade deficit of approximately $80 billion (see Exhibit 3). The decade-long trajectory reveals the continent's acute sensitivity to global commodity cycles. The 2015–2016 oil price collapse pushed Africa's trade volumes to a twenty-year low, with a sharp divergence between resource-dependent economies — where oil exporters like Nigeria and Angola stagnated — and non-resource economies that maintained 7–8% growth. The COVID-19 shock in 2020 triggered another collapse, as global commodity prices plunged and GDP growth fell to -2%, followed by a V-shaped rebound in 2021. Most recently, the 2022–2023 period saw a brief export spike driven by the Russia-Ukraine commodity price surge, but this was accompanied by severe imported inflation and currency depreciation across the continent as the U.S. Federal Reserve's aggressive rate-hike cycle strengthened the dollar and tightened global financial conditions.
Trading partners: the pivot toward Asia. The composition of Africa's trade has shifted significantly over the past decade (see Exhibit 4). Asia — led by China and India — has overtaken Europe as the largest source of African imports, rising from 28% to 36% of total import value between 2010 and 2023, while Europe's share declined from 38% to 32%. On the export side, Europe remains the largest destination at 39%, but Asia's share grew from 24% to 28%, and the Middle East expanded sharply from 3% to 11%. North America's role contracted on both sides. These shifts reflect the deepening of China-Africa commodity trade corridors and the growing role of Gulf states as both energy customers and investment partners.
Intra-Africa trade: large potential, still constrained. Trade between African countries totaled $192.2 billion in 2023, growing at 3.8% (Afreximbank). Yet intra-continental trade accounts for only 18% of Africa's total exports,compared to 70% in Europe and 52% in Asia, reflecting persistent barriers including tariff fragmentation, currency inconvertibility, and poor cross-border infrastructure. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), operational since 2021, is projected to increase intra-African trade by up to 52% once fully implemented, but progress remains gradual.
Remittances: a lifeline generating massive C2C payment demand. Africa received $52.2 billion in remittance inflows in 2023 (World Bank). The top remittance corridors are Saudi Arabia→Egypt, UAE→Egypt, U.S.→Nigeria, Kuwait→Egypt, France→Morocco, underscore the geographic pattern: African labor exports to the Gulf, North America, and Europe generate a steady reverse flow of household income. These corridors represent one of the largest sources of demand for affordable, fast cross-border C2C payments. As what Section 2 will show, these are also areas where the existing financial system fails most visibly.
Section 2 — A Financial System That Cannot Keep Up
2.1 Banking exclusion and financial account gaps
Africa's formal financial system reaches only a fraction of the continent's population. According to the World Bank's Global Findex database, only 49% of adults in Sub-Saharan Africa owned a financial account in 2021–2022; by 2024, this had risen to 58%, still among the lowest global rates. Compounding this low coverage is sparse branch infrastructure — the IMF Financial Access Survey data shows Kenya with just 4.4 bank branches per 100,000 adults, Morocco with 22.2, and even South Africa (the continent's most developed banking system) with only 38.7 — far below the global average. The result is a massive unmet demand for basic financial services: payments, savings, credit, and insurance.
2.2 International de-risking and correspondent banking withdrawal
Africa faces a second barrier: the international financial system itself is retreating. High perceived risks around anti-money laundering (AML) and know-your-customer (KYC) compliance — compounded by real challenges including limited formal ID documentation, lack of fixed addresses, low tax compliance records, and heavy cash-economy reliance — have triggered a wave of de-risking by major global banks. Since 2016, correspondent banking relationships have contracted sharply: South Africa lost over 10% of its overseas correspondent banks, while Angola saw a 37% decline (SWIFT, 2016). This withdrawal directly raises costs for legitimate cross-border transactions and excludes smaller African financial institutions from the global system.
2.3 FX mismanagement and chronic inflation
Monetary instability compounds these structural deficits. Fiscal deficits and weak tax bases have led African central banks to rely on currency printing to finance government spending, triggering persistent imported inflation as food, fuel, and manufactured inputs surge in price due to currency depreciation. Weak monetary policy transmission — a legacy of shallow capital markets, concentrated banking systems, and limited central bank independence — means rate hikes fail to contain either inflation or currency pressure. In 2024, Africa-wide inflation reached 20.1%, the highest of any region globally, eroding the value of savings held in local currency.
2.4 Consequences: cash dominance and payment system failure
These three failures, exclusion, de-risking and instability, produce visible outcomes: the vast majority of Africans remain dependent on cash for daily transactions; Sub-Saharan Africa has the world's highest remittance costs at an average of 8.46% per transfer (Remittance Prices Worldwide, World Bank, Q3 2025); and ordinary citizens lack an efficient instrument to store value against inflation. The banking system has failed on access, cost, and stability, creating a vacuum that alternative payment rails are rapidly filling.
Section 3 — Mobile Money and Cryptocurrency: Filling the Payment Vacuum
To bridge the gap left by a shallow and exclusionary banking system, Africa has developed the world's most vibrant mobile money and cryptocurrency markets. These alternative rails have not emerged by choice but by necessity — they solve real problems that banks cannot: accessibility, affordability, and stability.
3.1 Mobile money: Africa leads the world
Africa accounts for the majority of global mobile money transactions, with approximately 40% of Sub-Saharan African adults holding a mobile money account as their primary (or only) formal financial service, according to the Global Findex Database 2025. The M-Pesa platform in Kenya exemplifies this model: leveraging ubiquitous USSD technology (accessible via basic phone keypads), building a network of one million offline agent outlets, and tapping into universal mobile coverage, M-Pesa has captured 90.8% of Kenya's mobile payment market and has successfully expanded to seven other African countries including Tanzania, Ghana, and Egypt. This agent-based, low-tech architecture proved far more scalable and inclusive than branch-based banking — it works in rural areas, requires minimal documentation, and operates on thin margins.
3.2 Cryptocurrency: rapid adoption in SSA
Cryptocurrency adoption across Africa has accelerated sharply. In MENA, total on-chain value received around $600 billion between July 2024 and June 2025, while Sub-Saharan Africa recorded $200 billion over the same period — growing at a rapid 52% year-on-year rate. This growth is retail-driven and concentrated in a handful of countries (Nigeria, South Africa, Ethiopia, Kenya), driven by demand for value storage against inflation and low-cost cross-border settlement, use cases which neither mobile money nor the formal banking system adequately serve.
Section 4 — The Continental Divide: Structural Heterogeneity Across Africa
4.1 Why regional analysis matters
Africa's 54 countries operate across 42 different currencies and speak multiple languages (Francophone, Anglophone, Arabophone, Lusophone, and Hispanophone regions), creating persistent barriers to cross-border commerce and finance. These language and currency divides are not merely symbolic — they fragment payment flows, fragment regulatory frameworks, and fragment market opportunities. A meaningful analysis of Africa's payment landscape must account for this internal heterogeneity.
4.2 The Sahara divide: MENA vs. Sub-Saharan Africa
The most common analytical framework divides Africa along the Sahara: North Africa and the Middle East (MENA) are culturally and institutionally integrated with the Arab world, anchored by hydrocarbon wealth and deeply linked to global energy markets. They operate within the MENA financial and policy ecosystem, with relatively more developed banking systems and lower financial exclusion. Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), by contrast, remains largely outside this framework. It is this region — defined by shallow financial systems, acute dollar shortages, and currency instability — that has become the focal point for crypto and mobile money builders. SSA accounts for nearly 60% of global mobile money transactions and records the fastest cryptocurrency adoption rates globally.
4.3 The five-region framework: Growth, wealth, and adoption patterns
A more granular view divides Africa into five regions, each with distinct macroeconomic profiles. North Africa and Southern Africa are the wealthiest regions by per-capita GDP, while West Africa and Central Africa lag behind in development indicators, and East Africa records the lowest per-capita income. Yet growth dynamics are inverse to wealth: East Africa is expanding fastest, followed by Central Africa, North Africa, West Africa, and Southern Africa. Cryptocurrency adoption follows a similar pattern — Nigeria alone (in West Africa) accounts for the majority of SSA's crypto volume, while East Africa, South Africa, and North Africa show significant adoption; Central Africa and much of the broader West African region remain nascent markets. This divergence reflects both the size of the financial exclusion problem and local regulatory posture.
Section 5 — Deep Dive: SSA's Dollar Problem and Crypto Respons
5.1 Dollarization in Sub-Saharan Africa
Sub-Saharan African economies are deeply dollarized, far more than most other regions in the world. The metrics are stark: in Nigeria, USD deposits once represented approximately 40% of total deposits and over 80% of external debt is denominated in dollars; in Ghana, USD deposits once accounted for 20–30% of the total.This dollarization is not accidental, instead, it reflects rational economic behavior in the face of chronic currency instability.
5.2 Why dollarization? Three structural drivers
Dollarization in SSA arises from three distinct economic pressures.
First, value storage: Local currencies depreciate persistently as fiscal deficits and external imbalances force central banks to print money. The USD offers a stable denominator of value.
Second, medium of exchange: Commodity prices (oil, minerals, food) are globally quoted in dollars, and intra-African trade often settles in dollars even when both parties are African — because the dollar is more stable than any single local currency.
Third, access to capital: Shallow local capital markets mean businesses and governments must borrow in dollars from international creditors; when dollar debt is large relative to dollar earnings, currency risk becomes acute, prompting further substitution toward dollar deposits.
5.3 The "dollar shortage" mechanism
The paradox of SSA is not too many dollars, but too few. Export revenues in dollars are limited (commodity dependence, low manufacturing exports). Government FX reserves are depleted by large trade deficits and debt service. Central banks thus ration access to official foreign exchange through administrative controls. This scarcity creates a parallel black market where the dollar trades at a substantial premium to the official rate — sometimes 50–100% above parity. Citizens and businesses unable to access official FX channels turn to informal channels: global remittance companies like Western Union, informal money changers, and increasingly, stablecoins and crypto. The gap between the official and parallel rate is the wedge into which alternative payment systems wedge themselves.
5.4 Why cryptocurrency thrives in this vacuum
Stablecoins and cryptocurrency serve three critical functions absent from the formal banking system. They provide parallel-market access to dollars, bypassing capital controls. They settle cross-border transactions at lower cost than banks and remittance corridors. And they offer a store of value that is globally liquid, not subject to local currency risk. SSA's crypto adoption is thus overwhelmingly retail-driven and small-ticket: as Exhibit 10 shows, SSA has a higher concentration of transfers in the $1K–$10K range than the rest of the world, reflecting small remittances, trade settlement for informal commerce, and individual savingsflows. Nigeria dominates the region, accounting for approximately 45% of SSA's on-chain volume (as shown in Exhibit 11), but Kenya, South Africa, and Ethiopia are also significant hubs.
5.5 De-dollarization attempts and structural limits
African policymakers and institutions have attempted to reduce dollar dependence. The Pan-African Payments and Settlement System (PAPSS) aims to settle intra-African trade in local currencies and reduce FX costs. The planned "Eco" currency zone for West Africa seeks monetary union as a path to stability. Central banks have pursued aggressive rate hikes and capital controls. Yet all these initiatives have struggled against a fundamental constraint: SSA's structural trade dependency. So long as the continent imports more than it exports, runs deficits on external accounts, and earns the bulk of its FX from commodities, the demand for dollars will outstrip supply. De-dollarization requires industrialization and trade rebalancing — a multi-decade transformation that policy alone cannot achieve. In the interim, mobile money and cryptocurrency fill an essential gap.
Conclusion
Africa's exceptional mobile money and cryptocurrency adoption is not a technology phenomenon, it is a macroeconomic inevitability.
The continent's young population, vast natural resources, and integration into global commodity markets generate enormous cross-border payment flows, yet its shallow financial systems, chronic currency instability, and severe dollar shortages make the formal banking system unable to meet this demand.
Mobile money solved domestic payments; cryptocurrency is solving cross-border value transfer and inflation hedging. These are not niche use cases or speculative holdings, but essential financial infrastructure filling a vacuum left by structural economic constraints. Critically, these constraints are not cyclical, they are rooted in Africa's resource dependence, limited industrialization, and financial market development.
